Harpers Ferry, West VA

This ‘framed’ shot was taken through the doorway of what is left of St. John’s Episcopal Church. I tried to capture the breath-taking blue sky that was hiding behind the rubble. Built in 1852, this site was one of Harpers Ferry’s five earliest churches. The building, now in total ruins, served as both a hospital and barracks during the Civil War. After suffering considerable damage, it was abandoned altogether in 1895 when a new Episcopalian house of worship was built in the upper town. It was quite a hike to reach it, but the skeleton of this building told quite a tale.
